Orchid Lake. "The home of 30's"

Disaster !

Monday morning bright and early, i travelled 3 hours to fish the famous Orchid lake in oxfordshire.
me and my mate were dead excited to fish the water as we had heard so much about it.
after spending a good hour looking around the lake, deciding where to fish we spotted some fish rolling out by the island.
we paid for 3 days and 2 nights, and my mind was set to catch one of the famous orchid lumps.
after we set up and had decided where to fish we settled down for the cold night ahead.
early morning soon came with on a 2 beep drop back during the night.

Breakfast!
orchid lake was ideal for food as we fishing the road side with the motorbike cafe a few hundred yards behind us.
my mate went to get the breakfast and 2 coffee's and as he was gone the owner of orchid lake come round and asked me where my mate was....i replied by saying "hes just gone to get some food" the owned then said "pack your stuff up and leave"

i couldnt believe it, i didnt know what to say, other than "what have we done wrong ?"
The owner wasnt having any of it !
he then accused my friend of breaking a hole in the bush to get through when clearly it was there already !
i told the owner that i wouldnt travel over 200miles to break a bush and get kicked off....

he wouldnt listen to a word i had to say and got us off the lake straight away....i asked for my money back as we hadnt fished the duration we paid for....
im sure you can guess what his answer was ?............you guessed it....he said no.......

I was fuming and so dissapointed !

after years of wanted to fish the lake i then got kicked off for something my friend didnt do....

i really do not rate the service and kindness of orchid,

£7 to take me and my friend to the peg we wanted in his truck !

waste of money !

waste of time !

Grumpy old man !

DO NOT GO ORCHID LAKES !!!

YOU WILL BE DISSAPOINTED !!!

Myles

If he had his lines in the water i have no sympathy and if he didnt then i'm sure there's a bit more to this story than we are being told :D

Have fished there myself, and never had any issues with Marsh (even if my mate did catch a swan) we phoned him and he arrived promtly to assist and check all was well.

throughout the weekend he popped around and asked if we needed anything and how we were getting on and even advised areas of where the fish came from.

So unless any rules were broken I can't see any reasoning for this.

I've fished it only a couple of times, without problems and thought them fairly helpful (Marsh was a bit of a funny old chap at the time - but was very attentive, wanted to chat with us, have a cuppa etc.).

he only downside was a couple of his lads mowing the grass on Dorchester when we were fishing - but they have to do it sometime!

I get the feeling there is a little more to this - especially as your first post comes accross as a bit of a rant - do please feel free to share: Or is this also going on every other forum also?

PS: If I had seen someone breaking through a fence or boundary etc.. I would probably be a little annoyed.

i made sure my mates rods were out of the water.
i know the rules and i know there not there to be broken !

anyway he chucked us off for going through a hole in the bush, not for anything else.

the bailiffs come round to take us off the lake and THEY even APOLOGISED to us for what had happened ! and said it wasnt fair, a warning was needed if that !

This "marsh" bloke, hes got it all wrong.

Sorry fella but there has got to be more to this than we are reading. If you did not make a hole in the bush then there should not have been an issue. If the bailiffs sympathised with you then surely they must have walked around the lake enough times to notice a hole.

I'm guessing the hole was already there and your mate decided it was the quickest route to get your grub and he got seen going through it...

Am I far wrong?

11 years of fishing and haven't had one problem, i go to Oxfordshire and get trouble.

im not someone who causes trouble.

but because im a "youngster" im immediately classed as a Badboy.

all i have to say is.

if your planning on going orchid lake, be careful, dont even breathe otherwise you could get kicked off !

jeez

ian your right mate, he must have been seen going through it.

but prior to his going through it, there were some boys over in the corner causing trouble who got banned.....

so "marsh" was blatantly pissed from that and took it out on us also !

So your mate DID go through the hole in the bush?

Seems harsh but to be honest mate, by the sounds of it that hole was their through anglers "taking a shortcut" which over the years has damaged the bush, and the owner had had enough of it

As I said, It may seem harsh but my club ban people for passing gear over a wire fence which has had to be replaced multiple times, which costs money

All "Marsh" had to do was to give you a ticking off, but I see where he was coming from

Live and learn my friend

Hmm.. This certainly doesn't sound like the Orchid or Dorchester I fished and definately not my experience.

I agree it probably sounds a little harsh - but put into the fishery owner's perspective - he's just deal with a load of idiots and had problems to such an extent that he's banned them (Bare in mind he's a commercial fishery - not many people get banned from commercials!).

He's then either seen or been told that "those chaps down there have gone through the hedge" - a double edged problem as it lets people *in* as well as out.

In hindsight, he may have acted differently, he may not. On the upside, you don't have to travel so far to fish now! :)

yeah i agree with you kirky.

and fair enough if he was pissed off about it, all he had to do was tell us not to do it, and we wouldnt have.

we travelled over 200miles to go fishing, not to turn back.

shame though, Monuments next i think.

Hi mate and welcome to the forum, hope you stay around a while and enjoy the place

Couple of things mate.

 I can understand the owner getting the "hump" about your mate going through the bush, was there a sign or anything saying NOT to :?:

 Give it a couple of day's, then pen a letter to the owner ( he would have calmed down abit ) Explain who you are and that you had travelled mile's to fish his water, explain the the hole was there when you got there. Put that you did not know it was against the rules to use it as a short cut and you and your mate are both very sorry about the whole thing. Also explain that the other Bailiffs felt it a bit harsh that you were asked to leave. Put that you would like to fish the lake again at sometime and express that you feel he should at least give you and your mate your booking money back.

You never know mate, a nice letter - eat a bit of "humble pie" and see what happens

TBH I've fished orchid probably 60 times and I've never had any trouble down there, admitedly not recently, but like I said never had one problem on the place . That was the main reason myself and a few mates used to travel there, such a nice place to be

hiyer minty.
yeah sorry, it seems like i joined the forums just to rant about orchid but thats not the case :)
Thankyou for your advice, i will do that and see what sort of reply i get back.
also there wasnt a sign or notification telling us not to go through the bush, i can see "marsh's" point of view, but it was harsh.
Tight lines guys :)

i live in Braintree - essex.

fished local syndicates for ages, and we just wanted to go somewhere else with a chance for a better carp....
so we chose orchid over monuments....

ive always wanted to go monuments but one of my mates went there and does not recommend it atall....even though he had two twenties and a thirty with pictures to prove it....

have wanted to go horseshoe aswel, maybe i might go there instead of monuments..

I had a bit of a disagreement with Marsh over various things on another site - nothing related to this specific issue - however everyone I know who has fished there has had a good time and enjoyed the place.

Such a shame about next door :( :( :( :( :(

Linear's got to be a better bet IMO if you want a change outside of Essex - although I'm sure you don't have to go all the way round the M25 and up the M40 to find some decent waters mate!

For your sanity mate, just join another club/syndi. You live in Essex there's shit loads if you do the research

I'd rather give my money to a club where there are decent owners and anglers alike, than pay £50-£60 to fish a puddle for the weekend

FACT - Everyone that fishes Orchid are told the rules and given a hard copy of them, they are told if they are caught going through the hedge they will be asked to leave. For the anglers that do fish here they know their tackle and cars are safe.
